According to PMI's Standard for Portfolio Management,
Vision and mission statements should be single thoughts that can be easily understood. The strategic vision statement describes where the business sees itself based on the chosen strategy. The strategic mission statement explains the overall approach for achieving this vision. This means that the statements should be simple enough to be understood at all levels. If not then the vision is not good enough. Clarity of mind is essential for good performance. Let's take a few examples:
Volvo's Vision:
To be the most desired and successful transport solution provider in the world.
Driving prosperity through transport solutions.
Microsoft's Mission:
Our mission is to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more.
Ford Motors Vision:
To become the world’s most trusted company, designing smart vehicles for a smart world.
Ford Motors Mission:
To make people’s lives better by making mobility accessible and affordable
Ericsson's Vision:
To make people’s lives better by making mobility accessible and affordable.
Thus all the above companies might be producing highly complicated products, their mission and vision is quite simple statements.
